The
Tibetan community in Switzerland enjoyed a pre-Christmas concert and
dance party in the heart of Winterthur, Switzerland on December
21st. Headlining the evening's concert was US singer / performer
Techung (winner of the 2006 JPF Asian music award), Tenzin Choegyal
from Spain and other local Tibetan singers and dancers. The evening
was sponsored by Dekyi Music and co-sponsored by Snowlion Media.
Friday is usually a busy night for most Tibetans in Switzerland, but
especially so this day with last minute Christmas shopping and
parties. The organizers pulled in a crowd of about two hundred
enthusiastic fans who were treated to a wide variety of Tibetan
traditional songs, soaring Kham lus, elaborate traditional dances
and new dance beats from Tibet as well as the community in exile.
During the concert, the organizer showed slides and DVDs of the
recent protest of Hu Jintao by Tibetans in India.
The evening started with an introduction of the program by Tenzin
Losel Tsokhang and Tsering Dorjee Margye in both Tibetan and Deutch
language. This was followed by a spectacular dance performed by the
local Tibetan dancers entitled Mi Rik, about the unity of the three
provinces of Tibet. The same dancers later performed Lha Dhar Karpo,
a famous circle dance from Kham. Tenzin Rabsel Tashi, a
multi-talented young Tibetan born in Switzerland accompanied the
dancers with a melodious Piwang, the Tibetan violin.
Techung
opened his act with his trade mark song Bo Kangchen Yul la -Snow
Lion of Peace and weaved into Gya mar Jak Tsok- imperialist
China, and couple of Thoshaes (Lhasa music.) He was joined in by
Tsering Choedon Shitsetsang or Tsechoe-la, and Dawa Dargye Bhakyil
both TIPA graduates. They were accompanied by Tsering Shitsetsang's
husband, self taught musician Lobsang Shitsetsang on Gyu Mang (hammer-dulcimer)
and Shedup la, playing the Piwang. Tenzin Chogyal followed Techung
with his hit song Yeshe Norbu (Jewel Heart.) He then picked up his
Dranyen to play a song from his latest all-traditional album Zampa,
released by Bod Gyalo Media.Tarsey Tsephun sang a couple of upbeat
songs and got the crowds dancing up on the stage. Tenzin Choezying
and Dawa Dolma, recent arrivals from Kham,Tibet, charmed the
audiences with Kham Lus and pop songs. Dawa Dolma's authentic
costumes and head dresses with amber and silver belt pouches were
exquisitely matched on the stage with her beautiful smile. The
concert and the multimedia show lasted till about midnight. At that
time, Dekyi Music's founder Tenzin Dekyi stepped up on the stage and
concluded the evening with khata offerings to the artists and
volunteers and thanked the audience for their support.
During the break the artists signed their CDs and took photos with
their fans. Radio Free Asia also covered the evening's program.

The bar and Tibetan kitchen were busy catering to the crowd
thoughout the night. Around one a.m. the dance party started with
upbeat Tibetan/Hindhi/Hip-Hop songs which shook the crowd loose all
over the stage and near the bar.The spirit of the Tibetan community,
those who lived here for over 30 years and those who have arrived
here in recent years, jelled into one fun evening with music and
dance which lasted till dawn.
Dekyi music is not an enterprise nor an organization, but rather one
lone Tibetan women creating an environment in Switzerland to connect,
interact and bond Tibetans through music. She feels passionate that
Tibetan culture needs individual support and action. Dekyi Music and
Snowlionmedia also encouraged individual Tibetans in Switzerland to
sponsor needy Tibetan children in Nepal. They were able to find five
generous hearts to help five children in Nepal. Tenzin Dekyi is a
former student of the Tibetan School in Mussoorie and worked later
in Dharamsala. She is active with the the Switzerland Tibetan Dance
Group.
Snowlionmedia is a new online music company operated by Tenzin Losel
Tsokhang and owned by a team of Tibetans living in Switzerland. The
online portal hopes to promote Tibetan religion and culture through
the distribution of Tibetan music and films in Europe. The intention
of this website is to support the Tibetan artists by selling their
